Uterine Ablation
- This is a procedure that destroys the uterine lining and is used for patients who have excessive bleeding with their periods.
- Many patients can have this procedure done in our office using the Novasure system.
- Medication is used the night before your procedure to help dilate the cervix.
- Oral sedation and an injection are given the day of the procedure.
- Local anesthetic is used.
- Many patients will also have a Hysteroscopy done at the same time.
- The Novasure device usually takes only 90 seconds to complete the uterine lining destruction.
- >60% of patients will have no periods after the procedure.
- 97% of patients are satisfied with their lighter periods after the procedure.
- This procedure has drastically reduced the number of hysterectomies done for excessive bleeding with periods.
- Full recovery can be expected within a few days.
For those patients whose insurance carrier does not cover this procedure in the office, Novasure can be performed at Capital Medical Center as an outpatient.
Some patients are not candidates for a Novasure ablation and a second option is Thermachoice which uses a heated, water filled balloon to burn the uterine lining. At the current time SSWC providers peform this procedure in an outpatient setting using general anesthesia.
