Abnormal PAP
An abnormal PAP test result is always an anxiety provoking situation for most women.
SSWC providers are skilled in the following procedures/techniques.
- In office Colposcopy* to evaluate abnormal PAP smears
- Surveillance of patients with abnormal PAP smears
- Treatment** of patients with cervical dysplasia*** (LEEP)
*Colposcopy is an in office procedure that magnifies the cervix. Biopsies are taken of abnormal tissue and further treatment or surveillance is based on those results. It requires no anesthesia and takes about 15 minutes.
In office treatment of more advanced dysplasia is accomplished with a procedure called LEEP which uses cautery to remove the abnormal cells. It requires a local anesthetic and can be performed in about 15 minutes.
***Dysplasia is a potentially precancerous condition of the cervix. IT IS NOT CANCER. There are 4 types. Mild, moderate, severe and non-invasive cancer.
