Birth Control Pills
Birth control pills are used as contraception and to control abnormal periods. Side benefits include protection against ovarian cyst formation, anemia, uterine and ovarian cancer. They can also improve symptoms of PMS and acne.
The most common side effects are nausea, break through bleeding and mood changes.
The most serious side effect is the formation of a blood clot in the leg that can travel to the lung arteries or Deep Venous Thrombosis (DVT). The absolute risk is 2/10,000 users as opposed to the normal risk of 1/10,000 users.
It is safer for the patient if she does not smoke, but the pill is not contraindicated for smokers unless they are over 35 years of age.
